The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at Advocate Sherman West Court plays an important role in caring for both our residents and short-term rehabilitation patients.
Advanced Rehabilitation Programs
There are three areas of therapy that are offered at Advocate Sherman West Court: speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.
Many patients our team works with are short-term residents of Advocate Sherman West Court. But there are also longterm residents of Advocate Sherman West Court who benefit from therapy. All residents are evaluated on a quarterly basis for functionality and mobility to determine if any type of therapy is needed.
The goal of the physical medicine and rehabilitation department at Advocate Sherman West Court is to restore and maintain the function and mobility of our residents. Therapy is also used for short-term patients, often those recovering from a medical condition such as stroke or joint replacement, to help re-train themselves in self-care such as being able to dress independently.
Having an on-site therapy department at Advocate Sherman West Court allows our therapists to communicate with the nurses and other caregivers to carry on our residents' physical therapy training once their sessions are completed.
Physical therapy intervention in older adults may prevent disabilities associated with aging and restore their highest level of functionality. Our physical therapists are able to work with all our residents to help them understand these changes and offer assistance to help regain strength and mobility, and prevent injuries from occurring.

Occupational therapy is an important aspect of a care program for our residents who are recovering from a medical condition such as a stroke or a joint replacement procedure. Occupational therapy refers to a person's ability to perform daily tasks in their lives.
Our therapists work with these residents on an individual basis to help them re-learn daily living activities such as bathing or dressing leading to a more independent lifestyle. At Advocate Sherman West Court, we have developed programs to ensure a smooth transition from the hospital.
A nurse case manager will work with the therapist to prescribe a customized treatment program designed to return the individual to optimal health and independence.
Our speech therapy program focuses on communication and cognitive skills. Speech language therapists provide services to our residents whose ability to communicate has been impaired. Therapy services are also provided for individuals who suffer from swallowing disorders or difficulties due to medical conditions, including stoke.
