Concussion likelihood jumps among kid athletes

By Luke | August 31, 2010

This blog post uses information obtained from an article on MSNBC.com. To read the article in its entirety, click here.

The long-term effects of concussions on the human body are just starting to be fully appreciated. The National Football League is now taking concussions seriously, and the trickle-down effect is leading to other sports and demographics. One demographic being closely monitored is that of children, both the 8 to 13 and 14 to 19 age groups.

A recent study “examined concussions in organized youth sports involving ages 8 to 19. ER visits for 14- to 19-year-olds more than tripled, from about 7,000 in 1997 to nearly 22,000 in 2007. Among ages 8 to 13, visits doubled, from 3,800 to almost 8,000.” Read the rest of this entry »

Video: Our Visit with Toby the Therapy Dog

By Luke | August 30, 2010

Our roster of therapy dogs is a dedicated bunch, and this includes Toby, the 7 year old Tibetan Terrier. Last week, we followed him as he went about his business of cheering up patients at Sherman Hospital.

It’s believed that Tibetan Terriers are descended from the most ancient dog breeds, and that was apparent in Toby. His demeanor was perfect for his twice-a-month job as a therapy dog. He was patient, attentive and comforting while he was on his rounds.

The video below gives a nice glimpse of what it’s like to be a therapy dog at Sherman Hospital. For more information on Toby and our Pet Therapy program, click here for more information!

A photo gallery is on display today for our employees, but we also wanted to share the images with as many people as possible. The gallery photos are below, and they showcase a few different sides of the new Sherman Hospital, all of which are bright and beautiful!

Introducing Our New Celebration Brick Program

By Luke | August 24, 2010

Sherman Health Foundation has announced its new Celebration Brick Program. Community members are invited to purchase engraved bricks which will be installed on the lakefront terrace on the hospital’s new campus, 1425 N. Randall Road in Elgin. Engraved bricks are a great way to commemorate family and friends, celebrate special moments, mark milestones, or send an enduring message of hope and gratitude.

These personalized bricks create a unique legacy for all to see and celebrate for years to come. Funds raised by the Celebration Brick Program will support the work of Sherman Hospital.

Bricks purchased by September 17, 2010 will be installed in October.

For more information on Sherman Hospital’s Celebration Brick Program, or to purchase a brick, please call Bonnie Wolinski at 224-783-3021, or visit the Sherman Health Foundation website.
