Since June is Men’s Health Month, here’s another article for the guys. It’s true that men and women gain weight in different places, and men are more prone to gain weight around their midsection. Studies show that about 70% of American men are overweight, and much of their extra fat is found around their belly.
The “Flat Belly Diet! For Men” provides both diet and fitness plans for men who want to lose some weight around the stomach area. Before you begin battling the belly bulge, you need to take a look at which type of belly fat is affecting your health.
There are two types of fat that can accumulate around your waist. The first is subcutaneous fat, which is basically the fat that you can visibly see and physically grab. Your body needs to have a healthy amount of this fat in order to provide you with energy and insulation when its cold. However, having too much can lead to obesity and increase the risk of diseases such as:
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Metabolic syndrome
- Certain cancers
- Type 2 diabetes
- Sleep apnea
The second type of fat is visceral fat. This fat is internal, so it cannot be seen from the outside, but it is more harmful. Visceral fat is needed to protect your organs, but too much of it can lead to increasing your risks of diseases including:
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Cancer
- Alzheimer’s
The only way to decrease both of these fats simultaneously is to regularly eat monounsaturated fatty acids. These fats are found in foods such as oils, olives, nuts, and avocados. Recent studies show that a diet with a healthy amount of these fats can actually help you lose weight around your stomach area. A diet rich in these fats can specifically help lower your visceral fat.
Research also showed that the the “Flat Belly Diet” can reduce visceral belly fat by 33%! It can also lead to decreases in your cholesterol, blood pressure, and insulin resistance.
