Sherman Purchases The da Vinci S Surgical System
ELGIN, Ill. - Sherman Hospital is excited to announce the purchase of the da Vinci S Surgical System, a sophisticated robotic platform designed to expand our surgeon’s capabilities - and for the first time - offer a minimally invasive option for major surgery. Sherman is the only hospital in the region to acquire the da Vinci S robotic platform, the latest, most advanced system in the da Vinci series.
Unlike the original da Vinci system, the da Vinci S provides the surgeon with a high-definition, 3D video image of the surgical site in real-time. Compared to traditional surgery, this technological advancement provides the surgeon with a more detailed and defined view of the patient.
"The da Vinci S is truly remarkable," said John Myers, RN, business manager, surgical services at Sherman. "By acquiring this system, Sherman is expanding its surgical capabilities and giving patients a minimally invasive option for major surgery."
The da Vinci S consists of two primary components: the surgeon's viewing and control console and the surgical arm unit that positions and maneuvers surgical instruments.
Seated at the console, the surgeon views the high-definition, 3D video image of the surgical site and controls every surgical maneuver via instrument controls. Robotic and computer technologies scale and seamlessly translate the surgeon's exact hand movements into precise micro-movements of the da Vinci instruments. These pencil-sized instruments provide the agility of the surgeon's forearm and wrist at the operative site through incisions less than 1 cm.
The da Vinci S is changing the experience of surgery, for the surgeon, the hospital, and most importantly, for the patient. Patient benefits includ:
Significantly less pain
Less blood loss
Less scarring
Shorter recovery time
A faster return to normal daily activities
And in many cases, better clinical outcomes
The system will initially be used at Sherman by urologists for prostatectomies and other urologic procedures. This minimally invasive approach, utilizing the latest in surgical and robotics technologies, is ideal for delicate urologic surgery, in which the target site is not only tightly confined but also surrounded by nerves. Other uses of the system include major gynecologic and cardiothoracic surgery.
Sherman’s first surgical procedure with the da Vinci S will take place December 4. The robot team at Sherman consists of Debbie Lemieux, R.N.; Helen San Jose-Catibog, R.N.; Jesabel Serrano Santigo, C.S.T; and Marlita Gutierrez, C.S.T.
